The C-130 Hercules is an American designed aircraft, which uses a turboprop system to create lift and fly. Most of the time it is flown by two pilots. It is operated by many different countries all around the world, such as France, Japan and Israel. The Spanish military forces own twenty of them, all located in the 231 and 232 Squadrons, in Zaragoza.
One of the main characteristics and reasons why it has been so popular along the decades is its versatility. The turboprop aircraft is mainly used in support to special forces operations and rescue missions: carrying vehicles and troops, or even skydivers; but it can also transport injured people. Moreover it has had an incredibly long and successful career for more than sixty years, having participated in many wars and conflicts like the one that took place in the Malvinas Islands, where British Army took advantage of them to defeat the Argentinians. Therefore, because of its numerous advantages, there have been multiple attempts to replace it, being the C-130 Super Hercules, the last of them.
The C-130 Hercules has become an icon in aircrafts’ world and popular culture, a lot of people recognize it even though they do not know much about planes. Furthermore, if we didn’t take into account the fighting and attack aircrafts, the C-130 Hercules would be the most famous military aircraft.
