Nowadays, radio communications are key for the successful flight of an aircraft. In fact, communications takes such an important role in aviation for several reasons.
On the one hand, maintaining a good controller-pilot communication, increases the level of safety by reducing possible accidents that could take place due to an on board misunderstanding. For instance, some expressions that guarantee that everything is going on track, such as “Roger” or “Affirmative”, can be key to prevent a possible fatality.
On the other hand, a poor communication can contribute to a deadly plane crash. For example, whenever an aircraft experiences an emergency situation such as running out of fuel or having problems with the engine, the cabin crew should report this problem by saying “Mayday”, which is a specifically prescribed for the declaration of an emergency. While explaining the problem may end up in a misunderstanding between the pilot and the controller, leading to a potential accident.
To wrap it all up, keeping the communication on point during the flight and being aware of the special words used between the crew members is essential for a good and safe flight.
