In aircraft world there are plenty of maneuvers that can be performed for different purposes. There are some of them that have a defensive purpose, other have an offensive purpose and some of them are just for exhibition of the pilot abilities.
Cobra maneuver is one of the most skill demanding ones and it also requires some plane specifications to be able to perform it. It consists in a sudden raise of the nose momentarily to the vertical position and slightly beyond, momentarily stalling the plane and making it a full-body air brake, before dropping it back to normal, during which the aircraft does not change effective altitude. Pugachev was the pilot that brought it to the public eye, for this reason it is sometimes called Pugachev’s cobra.
It is mostly a maneuver with exhibition purposes and just a few planes are able to perform it. The maneuver has never been used in real combat, but there are recordings of it being used in mock dogfights.
I love this maneuver because of its beauty, difficulty of performance and the pilot’s show off of abilities.
