Radio communications are a vital form of communication in the army in general and in aircrafts due to its different advantages.
The first advantage of radio communications is the existence of certain words that allow the communicator to send a long message in just a few words. Some examples are “Roger” which can be translated to “understood”, or “wilco” which means that we will execute an order.
On the other hand, longer words are also used in radio communications in other not to misunderstand short words such as “yes” or “no”. For these two words we use “affirmative” and “negative”, which are way longer but at the same time easier to understand in case of interferences.
Finally, in radio communications it is used what we call the phonetical alphabet. This alphabet consists of different words which are given to each letter. For example, the word “Juliet” goes for letter J, “Foxtrot” for F…. Aircrafts must exchange messages which involve a lot of letters, and by using this alphabet, it avoids misunderstanding a B with a D, for example.
To sum up, the importance of radio communications in aircrafts lies in its capacity to make communication easier as well as safer.
