Radio communications are very important in every military operation. Their main purpose is to express information in a clearly and brief form. Some examples of these type of communication are the prowords and the phonetic alphabet.
Prowords are used to summarize long information in a short and easy way. They are very useful to avoid a misunderstanding in the message. Some of the most used prowords are “affirmative” instead of “yes”, “negative” to say “no” or “say again” to repeat the message another time. Other prowords used to verify that the communication is working correctly are “over” to clarify that you have finished your message and “roger” to confirm that you have understood the command.
Secondly, the phonetic alphabet is used to communicate letters without been mixed up. It is formed by words that were established internationally for each letter of the alphabet. For example, the letter B, D and V, that could be confused in a radio message, are represented by the words “Bravo”, “Delta” and “Victor”.
In conclusion, radio communications are very useful to transfer information in important missions. They are clearer, shorter and easier to understand than long sentences, and they can be used internationally.
