Communications being an essential part of aviation is no mistery, but why is this?
There are many reasons, but probably the most important one is coordinating all the aircraft approaching an airport. Without air traffic controllers, busy airports in important cities would be extremely dangerous, and mid-air collisions would happen too often. It is true that there are uncontrolled airports, but they receive at most ten flights a day, and communications still happen in a common frequency between aircraft, who have to report their position at least three times, 10 miles away, when the join the traffic pattern and on short final.
Another crucial use of communications are emergencies l, for example the famous Hudson River landing, without the aid from communications the pilot could have fallen in the temptation of turning back to the airport or even attempting to land in a different one, and later on it was proved that he would have crashed if he had taken that decision. It also helped to time everything smoothly, so that as soon as they landed, emergency services would be waiting for them. This is how communications saved hundreds of lifes.
